First off, there’s a huge picture (if you click on it) of my arse right here on LFTO. Claire’s done a wee feature on Alpkit’s Genius jeans which I’ve been bumming around in the past few months, good kit too.
My column this month is about the US versus UK aspect, I totally ran out of [...]

What we see there is a sneaky first look at the revamped Flux for winter, as well as being an outstanding colour there’s been some tinkering under the hood.
Paul had to knock me unconscious to get it back off me. The grin says it all as ever.
Most manufacturers ranges shrink for summer, or they suddenly come [...]

Ever since the camping trips of winter, I find myself ad-mining my gear more thoroughly in the tent. I think subconsciously I might be preparing for a quick exit under the guise of being more organised.
I remember vividly struggling find a torch while holding the tent down with my other hand.
That’s one thing about tents [...]

Montane are familiar now, we see their kit in the stores and on the hill, they’re a comfortable part of the UK outdoor psyche. But, I wonder how many of us actually see them as the ground breaking and boundary pushing manufacturer that they are?
They’ve been ahead of their time so often in design and [...]

Just in from PHD are a couple of slightly unusual items from their current range of limited run items made for their winter sale.
Above is the Minimus jacket, a simple stitch-through construction jacket with two handwarmer pockets, a weather resistant Drishell outer, a stud-off hood and elastic hem and cuffs. It’s warm, soft and light, light enough [...]

I’ve seen a few different clothing solutions in the past year, it’s good to know that membranes don’t have a monopoly of weatherproofing our persons. Retro gear has also featured large in these pages as solutions and features, as well as colours past, have been much lamented.
Covering all the above bases, and resolutely steering its own course is the Antarctic [...]

It’s not Black Sabbath, but it’s probably the closest we’ll get to a new Sabbath album. Although, it is Sabbath from a certain point of view, being the post Ozzy and Bill Ward era Sabs lineup that recorded Mob Rules, Live Evil and later on Dehumanizer. The politics and family trees of modern music must be the [...]

I went and put the kettle on and forgot to finish what i was saying…
I was wearing a sythetic baselayer top on Friday night. I’ve been wearing synthetics on and off in times recent, but I’ve not worn a synthetic overnight in years. When I was down in the Lakes last week I picked up [...]

The top of Beinn Ime is rocky, either wide expanses of it, or broken stretches bonded together by some earth. Not ideal for tent pegs.
But, a mix of all the new pegs ensured that all the guy points were solid all night.
The Y’s went in with a little difficulty due to their size, but once [...]

It was late by the time I left…
How many of my tales have started with that comment, Jeez. Planning is one thing, but unless you send a memo round to the rest of the world there’s always a chance that some unwitting soul will call upon your presence, and then with the liberal application of Sod’s [...]

I couldn’t keep my eyes open. Three nights without two consecutive hours of sleep to rub together kicked my legs out from under me.
I opened out the tents in the garage, unpacked my sleeping bag and had a cuppa. I went into the bedroom with the intention of getting my lounge about while not expecting visitors [...]

I watched the sun rise over the Southern Uplands as I headed South, and an awful lot of being indoors later I watched the sun set from Kirkstone Pass.
I enjoyed the best of the Lakes as I drove through all the nice places between appointements, but I’m not complaining, it was a good day with nice [...]
