Terra Nova Laser 20 pack

A lot of the stuff I use is “multisport”. It just means that you can run, cycle, walk, climb or whatever using it with different degrees of success. Adventure racing is where the development comes from, but the real benefits are to ordinary Joes like myself because I can get a hold of gear that’s [...]

Oot

I hadn’t realised quite how much I relied on my regular outdoor activity for my mental and physical well being. I went from being out and and about every couple of days to being in the house for almost three weeks straight. It did not go well. I’ve learned something about myself from this. I’m [...]

Trail, November ’08

“Lighter Luxuries” my column’s called this month, and it’s simple stuff. Lightweight hiking and backpacking should be fun,  it’s not a competition to leave the most stuff in the house and that’s what I’m saying in there. My pack always has room for daft extras like the squeaky Ajungilak pillow and a Danish Pastry. Or [...]

Yahoo! is an idiot.

I just renewed my Flickr Pro Account for the year. Hush, I’ll get a proper camera yet, you’ll see. It’s a Yahoo! service and when Yahoo! sent the payment receipt to my Yahoo! mail account, Yahoo! decided that their own mail was spam and put it in the spam folder. Stupid bastards.

The Return of Montrail

There was dismay when Montrail were scooped up by Columbia. Montrail had always seemed like a maverick left field company run by enthusiasts and racers, making some very original and exellently performing footwear. But they also had quality control issues and built-in flaws that would self destruct some models regularly. Columbia immediately decimated the range and it looked [...]

The more things change the more they’re not as purple as they were before

As I continue my indoor odyssey I pulled this multi-coloured delight out of the cupboard to play with. It’s an old Karrimor Kimmsack. You can still buy it today, it’s called an OMM Classic. Much refined, with better features and adaptability, but essentially the same pack. I was walking about the house wearing the KIMM stuffed with [...]

All this talk of snow

Snow is coming, it’ll be on the tops in a day or two. Maybe not quite like Ben Cruachan above seen about ten years ago, but give it a few weeks. This makes my heart sing. Not like the soaring angelic choir accompanied by harps and those big long trumpets that sensitive mountain folk hear. No, [...]
