Optimus Terra Solo Review

I covered the Optimus Terra Weekend a while back. The Solo is the same great design and performance, it’s just 600ml rather than the 950ml of the Weekend. I’ve taken it on a few trips now and it’s very usable indeed. The size is just about enough for a dehydrated meal and a cuppa, although a wee [...]

A day indoors

Home admin, catching up with my correspondance, finally putting the tent away and the footbeds back in my shoes. Actions not to be considered any kind of a victory as the day closes, but necessary work has been done. Events earlier in the week do seem a little distant however.

Gregory Packs, a quick look

Gregory packs have just landed. I’m excited about this, it’s a completely unfamiliar brand to me. I’ve got a Z 35-T roll-top for backpacking trips, an Iso for hill days and bike trips and a Reactor for bike, run and very lightweight days. I’ve had a quick poke at them with an inquisitive finger, eye and [...]

Holly and The Psychedelic Hedgehog

Smirnoff telly advert

Smirnoff’s current advert has all manner of scrap and debris flying out of the English Channel onto the land because the water has turned into vodka or something. Among these items are a Spitfire and a Lancaster. Shouldn’t we really be seeing a Messerschmitt and a Heinkel?

A’Chralaig and Mullach Fraoch-choire overnighter.

We left Glasgow mid-morning, a man down. Sometimes a weather window isn’t the Top Trump when there’s other things that need to be done. The drive was typical A82, but the sky was clear and the Metal was loud. We stopped at Ft Bill for lunch which turned out to be soup and a pie from [...]

Behind the Wall of Sleep

Had a magic trip up North. A lot of weather and kit to talk about once I’m recovered from this mornings frighteningly early rise through liberal application of duvet. You go away for a couple of days and it’s amazing what you miss. It always feels like longer when I’m one of these wee midweek galavants, I’ll [...]

Wee Day Oot

The three of us went for a wee wander around the trails above Lochgoilhead today. I’d been through there in a bit of a hurry on my WHW training runs, but there’s some lovely walks and it was nice to go back and take our time and show Holly some new things. She saw Heilan’ [...]

Mont Bell Ultralight SuperStretch DownHugger #4, first look

I’ve had this on test for a wee while now, but it still hasn’t had a proper hard task asked of it. This warmer weather though makes if perfect for Munro top camps, so I’ll get a better measure of it soon. Build quality is outstanding, and it’s very light. The stretch seam construction is a [...]

Haglöfs Iguana softshell pants, first look

New for this season, and kind of the strong silent type lurking shyly in the kitchen of the house that is Haglöfs trouser range. These are the Iguanas. Fully stretch with a stack of nice features, mesh hip pockets, big thigh pockets and back pocket. Reinforced knees and inner ankle patches and a zipped gusset from ankle cuff [...]

Salomon XT Wings, first look

These arrived this morning for test. They do look rather nice, and I’ll find out in due course what they’re like on the trail. The sole looks like it should be grippier than my usual XA Pros, the heel cup is well shaped and there’s enough mesh for them to be cool on the move and [...]

In The Grip Of A Tyrefitter’s Hand

My pointless trip up north to break the car was really just driving up and down the West Highland Way. I spent an awful lot of time looking at where the track is, even the bits I walked in the dark. I recognised the shape of land I passed over at 0200hrs, I smiled when I [...]

All Moving Parts (Stand Still) 4:59

I got to Fort William in good time even with the bank holiday weekend traffic. You always lose a few at Tyndrum and at Glen Coe where of course parking is plentiful. Really, I’m sure stopping on the carriageway and staring at the parked cars wedged in like drinking straws in a Macdonalds dispenser when [...]
