Oh, for crying out loud

Back Garden Adventurers

Okay, when I say “back garden” I usually mean the Kilpatrick Hills. But due to post ice-age population distribution, and the change from black&white to colour in the late 60s, back gardens in 99% of cases have more of a lawnesque feel to them, with a fencette motif and bird bath standing in for the [...]

The realities of kit testing

I’ve often read of folks being envious of GT from Trail and CT from TGO. The ideal life that is an endless cavalcade of free gear and trips to the mountains every day to try it out.
I’ve always been a bit suspicious of it as these guys have to work their way through a whole pile [...]

Nae mountains

The furthest I got from base this weekend was for a quick look at GoOutdoors in Coatbridge where I met up with some chums. It’s interesting, a vast shed of wonder/horror*. Turns out some of the staff are familiar. That element, folk that know their stuff, could be the making of the place rather than anything that [...]

Playing in the back garden

The day was lost from a getting any work done point of view. The weather was looking, well irrelevant lets face it. You look at the weather to see what to wear, not whether to go out or not. So I went up the Kilpatricks for bit a walk/jog/trail run.
It was wet, muddy, visibility was down [...]

Oot the windae

And not a technical fabric in sight. There appears to be a frog in the clouds however.

Descent

It’s the knees that get it. We came down in the dark on Sunday after spending way too long on the hill again. Exploring, fannying about, building sandcastles, don’t ask me I’m too busy having fun.

No trouble though, we could see the lights of civilisation twinkling at the southern end of Loch Lomond, headtorches were [...]

More chair avoidance, the Haglöfs Oz in winter (Michty me!) and Steel Kahtoolas

You know me, the grin is permanent. In the face of adverse conditions I just add more stuff onto my head. Such was the piercing cold and the ferocious wind encountered during our final couple of hundred meters on Ben Vorlich that we all ended up wearing everything we were carrying. Present but not necessarily [...]

Fruitloop

We were sitting having stake-out in the motor (reverse parked obviously) having visited both Greggs and Aulds and partaken of their wares in abundance. It seems that there is an animosity between both branches of the shops, The Greggs girls had a “Who do they think they are?” attitude toward the Aulds girls, the Aulds girls [...]

Couldn’t leave the word “pants” at the top of the page overnight.

It might leave the wrong impression on new listeners. So I’d like to talk about the underwear I’ve been wearing today instead.
An odd combination, both lightweight merino though. A Howies long sleeve crew and a pair of Chocolate Fish’s Taranaki boxers. The Howies top I’ve had for a year I think and it’s the stretchiest [...]

Haglöfs Mid Flex and Rugged Mountain Pants, First Look

Haglöfs have revamped their Climatic pant range for this year. Gone are Thor, Rabot and Nansen, and in are Lite, Mid and Rugged. At least it’s easier to see what your getting if not quite so wistful.
I’ve got a couple of pairs on test. They’re direct replacements of pants I’ve been using for a couple [...]

CAMP Corsa & Nanotech, Kahtoola Crampons and Icebug Speed updates. But more importantly, a stunning day out.

Three of us were out and took advantage of the stunning conditions on the 12th. Between us we had two sets of aluminium Kahtoolas and one steel set, two CAMP Corsa and one Corsa Nanotech ice axes, a set of Icebug Speeds and a set of Icebug GGFly’s.

We climbed Beinn Dorain and had a bit of [...]

I don’t care what the weather man says…

Aye, right.

…Extensive bright sunshine, especially inland. Mostly excellent
visibility, but temporarily poor in snow…
